The Basics

What Is a Chimney Chase Cover?

A chimney chase cover is a metal cap that sits on top of a prefabricated chimney chase — the framed, enclosed structure that houses the flue pipe on many newer homes. Unlike a masonry chimney that uses a concrete crown, a chase cover is the primary barrier between the elements and everything inside your chase: the flue pipe, liner, and surrounding framing.

Without a functioning chase cover, rainwater, snow, and ice have direct access to the interior of the chase. That water causes rust, wood rot, insulation damage, and eventually interior ceiling and wall staining — all from one failing piece of metal at the top of your chimney.

Most homes in the DMV area come installed with a standard galvanized steel chase cover from the builder. These covers typically last 5 to 10 years before rust takes over. When they fail, the damage they allow inside the chase compounds quickly — and often silently until it reaches the ceiling inside the home.

Material Matters

Galvanized vs. Stainless Steel Chase Covers

Not all chase covers are built the same. Here's why we only install stainless steel.

Galvanized Steel

Builder Standard
  • Rusts within 5–10 years in DMV climate
  • Allows water intrusion as rust develops
  • Rust stains run down the chase exterior
  • Requires repeated replacement
  • No meaningful warranty against rust-through

Stainless Steel

What We Install
  • Will not rust, pit, or corrode
  • Watertight seal protects chase interior
  • Clean appearance — no staining on the chase
  • Install once and never replace again
  • Lifetime warranty against rust-through
The Damage It Causes

What a Failing Chase Cover Causes

A rusted or failed chase cover doesn't just look bad — it lets water into your chase and starts a chain of damage that gets worse every season.

💧

Water Intrusion into the Chase

A failed cover gives rain and snowmelt direct access to the chase interior. Water accumulates around the flue pipe, soaks into surrounding insulation, and wicks into the wood framing of the chase structure.

🪵

Wood Rot & Structural Damage

Sustained moisture contact causes the wood framing inside the chase to rot. Left unchecked, this can compromise the structural integrity of the chase itself — turning a simple cover replacement into a major rebuild.

🦀

Flue Pipe & Liner Rust

Water pooling around the flue pipe causes the pipe and its connections to rust and deteriorate. A rusted flue pipe can develop holes or separations that allow combustion gases to escape inside the chase.

🏠

Ceiling & Wall Staining

Once water makes it through the chase framing, it reaches the ceiling and walls of the room below. Interior water stains near the fireplace or on the ceiling adjacent to the chimney are often traced back to a failed chase cover.

🌡️

Insulation Damage

Chase insulation saturated with water loses all thermal value and becomes a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Once insulation is water-damaged, it must be fully removed and replaced — adding significant cost.

🔴

Rust Staining on the Chase

As the galvanized cover rusts, orange-brown streaks run down the sides of the chase exterior. While cosmetic, it signals to buyers and inspectors that the chimney system has been neglected and water damage may be present.

How We Work

Our Chase Cover Installation Process

Fast, clean, and done right the first time. Most installations are completed in a single visit.

01

Inspection of Existing Cover & Chase

We inspect the current chase cover condition, measure the chase opening precisely, and assess the interior of the chase for any existing water damage, rust, or debris that needs to be addressed before the new cover goes on.

02

Removal of the Old Cover

The failed galvanized cover is removed and disposed of. If there is rust scale or debris inside the chase opening, we clear it before installation to ensure a clean, flush fit for the new cover.

03

Custom-Fit Stainless Steel Cover Installed

We install a heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel chase cover custom-fitted to your chase dimensions. The cover is secured flush to the chase top with proper overhang on all sides to direct water away from the chase walls.

04

Sealed, Tested & Documented

All edges are sealed and secured. We test the fit, confirm watertight coverage around the flue pipe collar, and photograph the completed installation. You receive before-and-after documentation on every job.

Warning Signs

Signs You Need a New Chase Cover

Most homeowners don't notice a failing chase cover until the damage has already started inside. Watch for these warning signs.

  • 🦀Visible rust or orange staining on the chase cover or chase exterior
  • 💧Water stains on the ceiling or walls near the fireplace
  • 💨Musty or damp odor coming from the fireplace or chase area
  • 🔍Rust-through holes visible in the existing cover
  • 📋Home inspection report flagging chase cover failure or water intrusion
  • 📅Chase cover is the original builder-installed galvanized cover and is 7+ years old

If your home was built with a prefabricated chimney and you've never replaced the chase cover — it's worth having it inspected. Most galvanized covers are already failing before rust becomes visible from the ground.

Lifetime
Warranty

A Chase Cover You'll Never Have to Replace Again

Every stainless steel chase cover we install carries a lifetime warranty against rust-through. That means no repeat repairs, no rust stains running down your chase in five years, and no water getting into your home from the top of your chimney.

The galvanized cover that came on your home was never meant to last. It was a builder-grade material with a known expiration window. Stainless steel is the permanent solution — install it once and it's done.

We use heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel on every installation. It won't pit, corrode, or stain the chase exterior the way galvanized covers do as they age.
